WeWork Black History Month Event & Fundraiser for Black Girls Code

In promotion of the Harriet Tubman stamp I designed for the $20 bill, I planned an event in collaboration with WeWork for their annual Black History Month celebration after hours. Every aspect of the event was a supportive celebration of black culture in America. $800 in proceeds from raffle prizes and an art sale went to Black Girls Code to support young black girls finding their voice through coding.

Three poets of color were hired to give readings portraying their lived experience with racism in America, illustrating the pain and discriminatory cruelty that exists in our society today. Poets included the talented CJ Parker, and Lydia Mason.

An exhibition of artwork by artists of color was displayed for sale as an expression of the current cultural climate regarding race, and the black experience in America.

Raffle prizes and proceeds from artwork on display went to Black Girls Code to support their mission to build pathways for young women of color to embrace the current tech marketplace as builders and creators by introducing them to skills in computer programming and technology.

I put my winnings from FIDA 2020 to use in funding the raffle prizes as well as hiring photographer, Davita Aundréa, for the event so the artists involved could have professional photos for their portfolios.

Together we created a collaborative atmosphere including music, dance, poetry, activism, awareness, and charity that all came together to support the black community in New York City through Black Girls Code.
